Walter Cronkite

Walter Cronkite, the longtime CBC news anchor was considered by many as ‘the most trusted man in America.’  Cronkite died Friday at the age of 92. Read more on Walter Cronkite below.

Walter Cronkite, the deep-voiced newsman, died Friday at his home in New York following a long illness.

“Walter was truly the father of television news,” Morley Safer, a correspondent for CBS’ ” 60 Minutes,” said in a statement. “The trust that viewers placed in him was based on the recognition of his fairness, honesty and strict objectivity.”

Cronkite made quite an impression on viewers with his reporting style. He rarely showed much emotion but many remember him in tears when John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Or when the Apollo 11 blasted off for the moon over 40 years ago with Cronkite stating, “Go, baby, go!”

Walter Cronkite was born in Saint Joseph, Missouri in 1916, and attended the University of Texas and then went on to take a reporting  position in Houston. Cronkite began to make a name for himself as a battlefield correspondent for United Press in Europe and North Africa during the Second World War. He then covered the Nuremberg war crimes trials, and then for two years with the United Press Bureau in Moscow.

In 1950, Edward R. Murrow, hired Cronkite for the Columbia Broadcasting System. In 1962, Cronkite took over as anchor on the network’s flagship CBS Evening News. Many of us recall Cronkite stating, “From our newsroom in Washington, in color, this is the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite.”

Cronkite served as CBS’s main anchor for 19 years and was known for his nightly sign-off of ” and that’s the way it is”, which became his catch phrase.

In 1981, he retired as anchorman from the CBS network at age 65, but continued to do occasional work as a special correspondent.

Our condolences to Cronkite’s family, friends, and loyal viewers throughout his years as news anchor.
