Rolling Stone’s & Beatles Former Manager Allen Klein Dies At 77 (Photos)
Legendary music manager Allen Klein, who managed the Rolling Stones and the Beatles, died Saturday after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Klein was 77. Read more on Allen Klein’s life and death below.
Klein founded Allen Klein & Co. in the 50’s before the label evolved into ABKCO Music in New York. This label held copyrights to music by Sam Cooke, The Animals, The Kings, Chubby Checker, the Rolling Stones, and many more.
Allen Klein was known for his hard-working but blunt negotiating style, and inked deals with the Rolling Stones and the Beatles, but both ended with legal battles.
In 1969, John Lennon persuaded the other Beatles to have Allen Klein take over their management. Paul McCartney didn’t approve and many say this disagreement could have prompted the split of the Beatles.
Lennon then had a falling out with John Lennon and Klein was thought to be the target of the Beatles song called “Steel and Glass.”
Defending his tough style, Klein told Playboy magazine in 1971: “The music business is about 99 percent no-talent losers who can’t stand a winner in their midst.”
Klein is survived by his wife Betty, three children and four grandchildren. Allen Klein’s funeral service will be held in New York on Tuesday.
