Pet Burmese Python Kills 2 Year-Old Girl Shaiunna Hare (Photos)
Posted on July 2, 2009
A pet albino Burmese python escaped it’s aquarium and slithered into the crib of a 2 year-old girl, wrapped itself around her and suffocated her. Read more on this horrifying story below, along with video and the 911 call.
Charles Jason Darnell, the boyfriend of the little girl (Shaiunna’s) mother, said he woke up and saw the Burmese python was not in its aquarium. He went to the child’s room and found the snake wrapped around the little girl in her crib.
Darnell said he grabbed a knife and stabbed the albino Burmese python until it let go of Shaiunna Hare, 2.
In a 911 call, Charles Jason Darnell, the boyfriend of Shaiunna’s mother, cries as he tells the dispatcher, “The baby’s dead. … Our stupid snake got out in the middle of the night and strangled the baby. … She got out of the cage last night and got into the baby’s crib and strangled her to death.”
The two year-old girl was already dead when deputies arrived on the scene.
Officials say it’s the first documented python attack on a human in Florida.
The snake was found under furniture and alive when officers removed it from the home.
“This is a very sad situation,” Sumter County Sheriff Bill Farmer said. “To keep a large, unsecured snake in the house is just asking for trouble.”
The couple owns a second snake, a 6-foot boa constrictor.
Darnell told deputies he placed the larger snake in a bag, which he put in an aquarium Tuesday night.
Two older children who were in the home at the time were unharmed.
Darnell and Shaiunna’s mother, Jaren Ashley Hare, 23, were questioned by deputies. No charges had been filed as of tonight.
The snakes have been confiscated and will be evaluated by a veterinarian to determine whether they should be euthanized, sheriff’s Lt. Bobby Caruthers said.
Darnell does not have a permit to own a Burmese python, classified as a “reptile of concern,” said Joy Hill, spokeswoman with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
It’s a second-degree misdemeanor to possess a python without a permit.
Why the hell would anyone keep a snake in a home with small children?

This was a freak accident, and the parents were negligent–but come on, people, MOST snakes are perfectly safe to have around kids. Most pythons are perfectly safe. The BURMESE python, once it’s over 8 feet, is not safe to handle alone, let alone leave unattended with a child. Please don’t let special interest groups pull the wool over your eyes–all snakes are not the same, and all pythons are not the same–most are small! The few giant species can pose a threat, and that’s why licensing should be required–and it was. These folks broke the law.
