Karl Malden said he got his distinctive large nose from breaking it playing football and football. Malden joked that he was “the only actor in Hollywood whose nose qualifies him for handicapped parking.” He liked to say he had “an open-hearth face.”
Karl Malden won an Oscar in 1951 as supporting actor for his role as Blanche DuBois’ suitor named Mitch in “A Streetcar Named Desire”.
Malden was also nominated as best supporting actor in 1954 for his performance as Father Corrigan in “On the Waterfront.” Malden played alongside Marlon Brando in both movies.

Just last month Karl Malden received the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award. It was presented by Michael Douglas.
“It was Karl who, more than anyone, got me to understand that an actor is just one part of a whole team that makes a TV series or movie work,” Douglas said in the upcoming July 19 airing of the event on TV Land.
