Jay Leno took over “The Tonight Show” back in 1992 from Johnny Carson. And now after 3800 shows, Leno passes the Tonight Show on to Conan O’Brien.

Leno, 58, thanks everyone that helped make the show No. 1. Jay’s eyes filled with tears although he was still smiling.

Thankfully, Leno will remain with NBC and be hosting a new primetime show at 10 p.m. weekdays.

Leno’s show finale opened with a standing ovation from the audience and a monologue targeting politicians and other favorites.

“Seventeen years,” he began. “I want to thank all the people who made it possible. Michael Jackson, Monica Lewinsky, Bill Clinton. We could not have done this show without them.”

Then Leno continued, “When I started my hair was black, and the President was white.”

About the future, he said, “People ask me, ‘Oh, what are you going to do after the last show? Are you gonna go on vacation?’ This kind of thing. … I’m going to a secluded spot where no one can find me: NBC prime time.”

But at the end, Leno turned serious as the camera went to his wife, Mavis, in the audience, saying, “One of the things I’m proud of, I’m leaving this dance with the same girl I came in with.”

Then Leno went on about the legacy.

“Well, there is a kind of legacy,” he said, smiling. “Here’s the answer. Take a look.”

He gestured to the curtain, which rose to reveal a passel of kids, the offspring of writers, assistants and others who worked on the show.

“The answer is 68,” Leno said with a grin. “We have 68 kids.”
