Grammy-winning rapper T.I. was sentenced to a year and one day in prison Friday for illegally possessing machine guns and silencers. Read more on T.I.’s sentencing below.

T.I.(real name is Clifford Harris) originally faced up to 20 years in prison and very possibly the end of his career, but performing community service as part of his plea agreement with prosecutors reduced his jail sentence.

Rapper T.I., 28, was sentenced in federal court in Atlanta. T.I. has toured the United States speaking to tens of thousands of youngsters about the dangers of drugs and gangs, completing more than 1,000 hours of community service.

In fact, T.I.’s anti-crime advocacy has been filmed on MTV’s reality show “T.I.’s Road to Redemption.”

The Atlanta rapper has many hits such as “Whatever You Like” and “Live Your Life,” could have his one year, one day jail term reduced further with good behavior.

David Nahmias, U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, said in a statement T.I.’s community service exceeded prosecutors’ expectations and that “there is still more to come when he gets out of prison.”

U.S. District Judge Charles Pannell agreed to ask prison officials to have T.I. surrender in the coming weeks but not before May 19.

T.I. also had a 1998 crack cocaine conviction that made it illegal for him to own guns, pleaded guilty to unlawfully possessing machine guns and silencers and possession of firearms by a convicted felon.

These gun charges stemmed from T.I.’s October 13, 2007, arrest by federal agents after the rapper had a bodyguard buy machine guns and silencers for him, prosecutors said.

T.I., who won two Grammy Awards in 2006 for best rap solo performance and best rap/sung collaboration, in October released his third consecutive No. 1 album, “Paper Trail.”

The father of six also starred alongside Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe in the 2007 movie “American Gangster.”

  1. smooth on

wait. T.I was originally sentenced to 20 yrs but because of him doing 1000 hours of community service he’s only serving 1 yr and 1 day??? He also had some time taken off because the judge thought he was an influence to the people that listen to him. Are you kidding me??? This is bullshit, so because he did comm. service they took off 19 YEARS!!?? and who gives a fuck who he influences, you do the crime you do the CORRECT time. A-list celebs always get away with everything. T.I is a convicted felon so that means he cannot posses any guns big or small. they found literally ARMY GUNS in his house. Rapper prodigy did 3 yrs for havin a 38 calibre but t.i gets only a year for havin MACHINE GUNS AND SILENCERS. either he is an extremely lucky man or he is a fuckin snitch
