Valerie Bertinelli donned a tiny bikini for the April 6 cover of People magazine, where she showed off her hard work… losing almost 50 pounds!

“It has been almost 30 years since Valerie last wore a bikini in public so this was a big deal,” People Senior Editor Galina Espinoza told Access Hollywood.

Valerie began nine months ago starting at 172 pounds at 5′4″.

“On Jenny Craig, she did lose 40 pounds to get down to 132 but for this bikini shoot she went even lower,” Galina explained. “Workout wise, she amped things up.”

Bertinelli lost another nine pounds by loweringher 1,700 calorie per day diet to 1,200 calories. She also cut out salt and hit the gym for one hour, four to five times per week. Valerie believes a combination of cardio and strength training minimized her “jiggly bits,” as she called them.

“It’s a much healthier relationship I have with food,” Valerie previously told Access. “I appreciate it. It’s more about nourishing my body than just soothing my discomfort.”

Valerie Bertinelli will show her bikini photos next Wednesday on Oprah.

And yet as any woman knows, those innocent-looking strips of Lycra can be a terrifying sight — especially for someone just shy of her 49th birthday (April 23), who only two years ago tipped the scales at 172 lbs. — more than 40 lbs. over her goal weight for her 5′4″ frame. But after whittling herself down to 132 lbs. in about 9 months on Jenny Craig (for whom she serves as a company spokeswoman), Bertinelli, who had last worn a bikini when she was 20, was ready for a new challenge.
