Billy Powell, the keyboardist with Lynyrd Skynyrd for 22 years, died Wednesday morning at the age of 56. Read more on Lynard Skynyrd’s Billy Powell’s death below.

Billy Powell, Lynard Skynyrd’s keyboard player died last night at his home near Jacksonville, Florida. Powell was only 56.

Powell reportedly had called 911 overnight and said he was having trouble breathing. It’s been said that Billy Powell was scheduled to see a heart specialist this week.

The Lynard Skynyrd Website has posted:

“A Great Loss — Beloved Pianist for the Lynyrd Skynyrd Band, Billy Powell, passed away last night. We will post more info shortly. The family and band request your respect and understanding during this difficult time. Thank you.”

The band will cancel upcoming shows and directing fans to its Website for tour updates.

Powell joined Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1972 after being one of the band’s roadies.

Powell survived the 1977 plane crash that took the lives of singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backup singer Cassie Gaines and other crew members. Despite suffering injuries including facial lacerations and nearly losing his nose, Powell was the first to be discharged from the hospital and was the only member to attend his bandmates’ funerals.

Billy Powell was married with four children.
