Jazz Great David “Fathead” Newman Dies (Photos)

Grammy-nominated jazz saxophonist and flutist David “Fathead” Newman has died in upstate New York. Read more on Fathead Newman’s life and death below.
David “Fathead” Newman died Tuesday night of pancreatic cancer at a hospital in Kingston. Newman was 75.
David Newman began his music career while in college touring with Charlie Parker mentor Henry “Buster” Smith. In 1954, he joined the Ray Charles Band as tenor soloist. Newman was with the Ray Charles Band for over 12 years.
Newman later played and recorded with many soul and jazz greats such as Herbie Mann, Aretha Franklin and Aaron Neville. In addition, David “Fathead” Newman had his own successful solo career.
Newman was nominated for a Grammy in 1990 for his work with Art Blakey and Dr. John.
David Newman was born on Feb. 24, 1933, in Corsicana, Texas, just south of Dallas, TX.
