Barack Obama’s grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died of cancer in Hawaii. Obama’s grandmother followed his campaign with lots of interest, so it’s sad she died right before the results of the election are decided between McCain and Obama. Read more on Obama’s grandmother’s death below.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s grandmother has died. Obama made a statement on Monday, just a week after he had paused his campaign in order to tell her goodbye in Hawaii.

“It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer,” Obama said in a joint statement with his sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng. “She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength and humility.”

Madelyn Dunham, 86, helped in raising Barack Obama from the age of 10 while his mother was working in Indonesia.

Obama had just returned in late October from visiting his grandmother in Hawaii. Obama stated that his grandmother had received tons of cards, flowers, and well-wishes from all over the country.

“Our family wants to thank all of those who sent flowers, cards, well-wishes and prayers during this difficult time,” the statement said.

“It brought our grandmother and us great comfort. Our grandmother was a private woman, and we will respect her wish for a small private ceremony to be held at a later date,” the statement said.

Obama’s grandmother, Madelyn Dunham had followed Obama’s presidential campaign and was very interested. It is rather sad her death comes a day before voters decide on a president between John McCain and Obama.

Obama affectionately called her “Toot” — short for “tutu,” the Hawaiian word for grandmother.

Dunham had recently broken her hip but the campaign had refused to comment on reports she was suffering from cancer.

Our condolences to Barack Obama’s family.
