Raffaello Follieri, 30, pleaded guilty in September to one count of conspiring to commit wire fraud, and also five counts of money laundering.

Investigators state that Raffaello Follieri told investors he could buy property belonging to the Catholic Church at very inexpensive prices. But instead, Raffaello Follieri used the investor’s money to finance his lavish lifestyle, which included an apartment that cost $37,000 per-month.

Follieri told Koeltl today at his sentencing, “I have dishonored my family name and embarrassed the church I love.” And Raffaello added, “I will never be able to wash away that stain.”

Follieri faced between eight and 10 years in prison under U.S. guidelines because his investors lost $12.9 million, the court’s probation department told the judge. Prosecutors said Follieri faced about four to five years in prison, as the loss was closer to $4 million, although Follieri previously repaid about $1.5 million of that. Follieri, who’s been held in custody since his June arrest, asked for a three-year sentence.

“Mr. Follieri was a sophisticated scam artist,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Reed Brodsky said in court.

So do you think the court was too lenient giving Follieri 4 1/2 years, or do you think he deserved more?
