Posted on October 4, 2008Inspired by the real-life memoir of Alison Shaw, the two-hour psychological thriller follows the lives of two young newlyweds who unwittingly move next door to one of Canada’s most notorious serial killers, David Snow, dubbed by the Ontario press as “The Cottage Killer”, as well as the “House Hermit”.
After she narrowly escapes a brutal gang rape. Alison Shaw, convinces her new husband Darris to flee the big city for a safer place. But the idyllic small town they move to turns into Alison’s worst nightmare when she discovers that a serial killer is on the loose. At first, their neighbor David Snow appears to be a best friend, loyal business partner and model citizen, but Alison senses something is amiss. Her fears are dismissed by neighbors, friends and even her own husband as the product of her nervous imagination. But is it paranoia from her past or is the town willfully blind to the fact that Alison really has become the killer’s latest obsession? Alison begins to doubt her own sanity while the killer next door continues his murder spree, leaving clues that only she understands.
A Friend of the Family is inspired by the real-life memoir of Alison Shaw, who in 1998, along with her husband Darris, moved to Orangeville, Ontario and met David Snow. David eventually became Darris’ business partner and a constant presence in Alison’s life. Eventually, she came to believe that David was seriously disturbed. Years later, Alison was a key witness in the murder case that would ultimately send David Snow to prison for life. Alison chronicled her ordeal in A Friend of the Family: The True Story of David Snow, originally published in 1998.
A Friend of the Family was shot on location in Calgary and High River, Alberta, as well as Dundas, Ontario.
