Legendary actor, Paul Newman, lost his battle with cancer at the age of 83. Arguably one of the best-looking actors ever, he was also a kind person that gave to many charities.
Newman was a major movie-star, but also in the food business with his Newman’s Own brand, which gave it’s proceeds to charity.
The Oscar winner, Newman was cast as a rebellious, sexy character in movies such as ‘Cool Hand Luke’ and ‘The Hustler’ and mid-career in films like ‘The Sting’ and ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’ opposite good friend Robert Redford.
Newman’s wife, Joanne Woodward, was an Oscar winner herself. The couple had a very long-lasting marriage, all of 50 years!
The gorgeous Paul Newman was thought of as a “James Dean” type, but made a name for himself with his awesome performances in ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,’ ‘Hud’ and ‘The Long, Hot Summer,’ where he met his second wife, long-time love, Joanne Woodward.
Paul Newman loved car racing, but also was a selfless humanitarian. His food products donated more than $250 million to different charities since 1982. He also had the “Hole in the Wall Gang Camps” to give children with cancer and terminal illnesses a summer filled with fun memories at no cost.
He sometimes teamed with his wife and fellow Oscar winner, Joanne Woodward, with whom he had one of Hollywood’s rare long-term marriages.
“I have steak at home, why go out for hamburger?” Newman told Playboy magazine when asked if he was tempted to stray.
They wed in 1958, around the same time they both appeared in “The Long Hot Summer,” and Newman directed her in several films, including “Rachel, Rachel” and “The Glass Menagerie.”
Paul Newman was definitely one of the most well-known actors, but lead a fairly private and elusive in his Connecticut home away from Hollywood, and remained married to Joanne Woodward for 50 years. Newman and Woodward had three daughters and a son, who died from an accidental drug overdose in 1978. Newman turned his son’s tragic death into something positive with the “Scott Newman Foundation” for drug abuse prevention and education.
In his later years, Newman made such memorable films as ‘Absence of Malice,’ ‘The Towering Inferno,’ ‘Fort Apache the Bronx,’ ‘The Verdict,’ ‘The Hudsucker Proxy,’ ‘Road to Perdition’ and Pixar’s ‘Cars’ as the voice of Doc Hudson. In 2007 Newman retired from acting, but with a career that spanned five decades.
