Shawn Hornbeck endured over four years of torture at the hands of sicko kidnapper, Michael Devlin. Hornbeck wasn’t ready to discuss all that had happened to him until recently.

“Nobody knows the real story except for me,” says Hornbeck in an exclusive interview with 48 Hours Mystery. “There wasn’t a day when I didn’t think he was just gonna kill me…[sometimes] it seemed I was better off dead than living through that.”

In the 48 Hours Mystery interview, Hornbeck tells how Michael Devlin knocked him off his bike, and of the day when he was finally rescued. “The thing that sticks out the most is [Devlin] said, ‘You were just in the wrong place at the wrong time,’” Hornbeck remembers.

Shawn Hornbeck lived day to day fearing for his life. “From day one, he had the gun, he had the power,” Hornbeck tells 48 Hours. Hornbeck was threatened with the death of his parents, so he posed as his son and did Devlin’s bidding.

Shawn Hornbeck was so scared of Devlin, that he never revealed who he really was, even though he had opportunities to ask for help many times. Shawn even said as he saw FBI agents at the door, he was scared. “I knew when they came in the door, it was either going to be something very good or very bad,” he recalls. “It was a new feeling for me to say who I really was.”

FBI agent Lynn Willett, describes the case, and her conversation with Michael Devlin that finally led to Shawn Hornbeck’s rescue from his kidnapper.

Hornbeck was kidnapped in October 2002 and held in the home of pizza parlor worker Michael Devlin, 43, until the teenager was rescued in January 2007 after Devlin kidnapped another boy, 13-year-old Ben Ownby. (Devlin was given 74 life sentences).

Shawn Hornbeck spent most of his first month bound to Devlin’s futon; he was constantly sexually abused.

“There wasn’t a day when I didn’t think he was just gonna kill me,” says Hornbeck, adding that his story features “a lot of gory, nasty details that a lot of people really can’t handle.”
