UPDATE: Travis Barker is said to be severely burned from the waist down, but expected to survive. DJ AM has severe burns on his face, which are being tended to currently. Sad news, Chris Baker, Travis Barker’s assistant died in the plane crash. To make this bad news worse, Chris Baker, 29, had recently married and has a new baby.
A rep for the Joseph Still Burn Center in Augusta, Ga., tells E! News that Barker, 32, and Goldstein, 35, are in “critical but stable condition. Barker arrived by ground transportation while DJ AM had to be airlifted to the hospital where he is currently in surgery.
DJ AM and Travis Barker were critically injured in a plane crash Friday night (September 19) in Columbia, South Carolina. They had just performed at a free T-Mobile show in the Five Points area, along with Perry Farrell and Gavin DeGraw. Perry Farrell’s manager, Peter Katsis, confirmed that Farrell, of Jane’s Addiction, was not on the plane.
Most of you know Travis Barker as the sick drummer from Blink 182 and +44, and his shows with DJ AM. Others might remember him and his ex-wife Shanna Moakler, from their MTV show called “Meet the Barkers”. DJ AM dated Nicole Richie for over two years, and Nicole Richie is said to be very upset by the news.
The plane crash happened just before midnight on Friday and involved a private Learjet with six passengers on board. When attempting to take off, the plane did not leave the ground, and began shooting up sparks, and skidded off the runway through a fence to a nearby roadway. The plane crossed the road and wound up in an embankment, catching fire on impact!
Out of six people on the small plane, only DJ AM and Travis Barker made it out alive, although both are said to be in critical condition. DJ AM and Travis Barker are being treated for extensive burns. Barker was flown to the Augusta Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia.
According to Lynne Douglas, public information officer for the Columbia Metro Airport, two passengers — who were later confirmed to be AM and Barker — escaped the aircraft while it was on the ground, while the other two passengers and crew members died in the crash.
Beth Frits, a spokesperson for the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia, confirmed that AM (born Adam Goldstein) and Barker were transported to a hospital in Columbia, following the crash. They were then transferred — AM by helicopter and Barker by ambulance — to the Still Center soon after. Damn, this is scary!
Four other people on board the jet died in the accident. The deceased have been identified as pilot Sarah Lemmon, 31, of Anaheim Hills, CA co-pilot James Bland , 52, of Carlsbad, CA, Chris Baker, 29, of Studio City, CA, and Charles Still, 25 of Los Angeles, CA. Travis Barker’s assistant, Chris Baker, died in the plane crash. Chris Baker was shown on the MTV “Meet the Barkers” show.
Barker and Goldstein got out of the plane on their own before rescue crews arrived, according to Lynne Douglas, a spokeswoman for the Columbia Metropolitan Airport. The four who died never emerged from the plane’s burning wreckage.
There were three men and a woman that were killed in the plane crash, Lexington County Deputy Coroner Brian Setree confirmed for MTV News on Saturday morning.
A South Carolina resident named William Owens was driving down a highway next to the airport when he said he saw a fireball go across the road. He told local TV station WIS News 10:
“I didn’t know what I had seen — it was maybe 800 feet in front of me, but as I approached it closer though I made out a fire. By then I was able to see the tail of the jet and I recognized it as a jet,” Owens said.
Owens then described what he saw as he tried to make it to the wreckage.
“It’s in flames and the fuel is running across the road and I had to cross the fuel to get to the two guys that seemed to have been dumped on the highway,” Owens said.
Owens said the two men (Travis Barker and DJ AM) were running around and stripping down to extinguish themselves. He then asked the men if there was anyone else on board the plane and they said four more were with them.
“We turned to the jet to try and see if there was anything we could do, but immediately, there was nothing anyone could do,” Owens said.
Former Blink-182 drummer Barker, 32, and DJ AM, 35, were the house band for the 2008 VMAs.
