Richard Collier, of the Jacksonville Jaguars was shot while he was waiting for some women outside of an apartment early Tuesday. Authorities say that Collier has life-threatening injures.
The two men had been out to clubs late Monday evening, early Tuesday. They met two females while they were there. Jefferson said the group decided to go to another location, but wanted to be in one vehicle. So, they went to a home in Riverside where one of the ladies lives about 2:30 a.m.
As Collier and Petway were sitting in an Cadillac Escalade waiting on the women (they were in a separate car), Jefferson says someone came up and started shooting.
Several bullets hit Collier. Petway, who was a passenger in the truck, was not hurt. Police do not have a motive or description of the suspect. Jefferson says he’s not sure if the women saw anything. He told us they are shocked.
Collier, 26, was shot several times but it’s not clear where he was hit.
Collier is listed in critical condition at Shands Jacksonville Medical Center, a hospital official said. At this time, the reason behind the attack is not clear. The Sheriff’s office is investigating the crime.
Collier was shot at around 2:45 a.m. in a nice neighborhood, just west of downtown Jacksonville and blocks from the St. Johns River.
This makes Richard Collier the third NFL player to be shot in the past 18 months. Washington Redskins star Sean Taylor was fatally shot during what police said was a botched burglary attempt at his Miami-area home in November. The Bronco’s Darrent Williams was killed when his rented limousine was hit by gunfire minutes after leaving a New Year’s party at a downtown Denver club in 2007.
During training camp, Richard Collier, the third-year lineman tried out for the starting postition at left tackle but was beat out by Khalif Barnes.
Earlier this year, Collier pleaded no contest to a drunken driving charge stemming from an incident last fall, avoiding trial and accepting six months of probation.
The 6-foot-7, 345-pound linemen was arrested Nov. 3 after officers found him asleep behind the wheel of his sports utility vehicle at a McDonald’s drive-thru window, according to a police report. Collier failed field sobriety tests and had a blood-alcohol level of .096. In Florida, it is illegal to drive when a person’s blood-alcohol level reaches .08.
Collier’s attorney, Hank Coxe, disputed the police report and recommended that his client go to trial, but Collier didn’t want the team to have to deal with the negative attention that it would generate.
Let’s hope Richard Collier will recover!

He’s our neighbor…please pray for him and his young son. Although it seems like he leads a sketchy life, he is great with his child for as young as he is. Who hasn’t been out late at 26? Times are just different now.
