Angel Matos was angry about the judge’s ruling, which is understandable when you give your life for your sport, but to give a roundhouse kick to the Olympic referee in the head as a protest…. not so smart!

Taekwondo athlete Angel Matos of Cuba now has been given a lifetime ban after kicking the referee in the face after he was disqualified in the bronze medal match on Saturday.

Leudis Gonzalez, Angel Matos’ coach, also received a lifetime ban himself when he responded to a problem in the men’s over-80 kg match.

“This is a strong violation of the spirit of taekwondo and the Olympic Games. The sanctions are the following and are effective immediately: Lifetime ban of the coach and athlete in all championships sanctioned by the [World Taekwondo Federation] and at the same time, all records of this athlete at the Beijing Games will immediately be erased,” the WTF said in an official release.

Angel Matos is a previous gold medal winner in 2000, and was actually winning the match against Kazakhstan’s rman Chilmanov, when he fell to the ground after being struck.

Taekwondo fighters receive a minute to seek medical attention, but Matos let that time run out.

Matos was pissed and pushed the judge, then went over and pushed and kicked the referee, Chakir Chelbat of Sweden in the face.

Further showing his anger, Angel Matos walked over and spit on the floor before he was escorted out.

“He was too strict,” the coach, Gonzalez said of the decision to disqualify Matos. Gonzalez also alleged the match was fixed and accused the Kazakhstanis of offering the judge money. It was getting pretty ugly huh?

In the gold-medal match, Cha Dong-min of South Korea defeated European champion Alexandros Nikolaidis of Greece 5-4.

Nigeria’s Chika Yagazie Chukwumerije won the other bronze medal, defeating Akmal Irgashev of Uzbekistan.

Here is the video of Angel Matos kicking the referee and pushing the judge. The first video below is in photos, the second the actual video. Not certain how long this video will be available to view, check it out:

First, Matos didn’t kick the referee’s ass, he kicked him in the face – or was that just your way of calling the ref ugly?

Second, poor Ara Abrahamian… he can’t even win the gold medal for being the biggest jack@$$ at these Games.

In this country, Angel “Asshole” Matos would also be charged criminally with assault. I’d be all for his earlier medals being stripped from him–how cool would that be for the guy who was 2nd in 2000 to get a phone call saying, “Hey buddy, it’s your lucky day, you are now an Olympic gold medalist”!

I hope Matas also gets a civil suit and thrown in jail for assault, truly classless.

Looks like HE thought his left foot wasn’t out of the competition. If he had a career left maybe he ( or his banned coach) could learn to tell time.

didn’t look like an ass-kicking to me, the ref just took the kick and turned and walked away like a bigger person would do. i don’t understand what he was upset about, the time ran out. is the ref supposed to make a special rule for him? what a pussy!!!

    man one minute…

i can’t even tie my shoelaces in that time (well maybe) but if i stub my toe or get a stinging cork in the thigh i could be down for two or so minutes but back up within the next five to ten. the rules sound pretty shit when an olympic medal is at stake. obviously the damage to the toe wasn’t that great and he was still able to compete but i would be fuming if i were him…

yeah not so smart to kick the guy in the face though. maybe the nuts would be better… oh wait! the ref didn’t have any… if he did he wouldve defended himself.

in the bout the winner by default was a jackass for celebrating like he actually earned the victory.

Way to go you moron Cuban.

    1) Train for the olympics for 20 years. $10000
    2) Don’t pay attention to rules and get DQ. $0
    3) Kick ref in face for upholding regulations. $0
    4) Get banned from the sport you dedicated your life to forever and your olympic record stricken. Priceless!!!

but he loves cock. Hey Justin- WTF are you talking about…did he not know the rules after competing in two prior Olympics? Stupid rule or not it’s a rule..the ref has no option than to call it. But hey…I’m all for ref’s using their discretion- how about giving guys a few extra seconds when they get knocked down in boxing (I mean 10 seconds? I can’t even tie my shoelaces in that time **cough**)- let some sprinters leave the gates a second early as long as they “intended” to leave on time- yeah…great thinking there genius.

Oh yeah- the ref took that kick and just walked away…WOW – no wonder the Cuban was angry. He just took a swipe at a ref who was not prepared and couldn’t even put him on the ground. How sad. Another great point there Justin.

As for the other guy jumping around…well I guess you finally got one thought right.

  13. Idiot on

He should have no business learning any kind of martial arts at all with that kind of self control. Rules are rules! Every single athlete there has to obey them. If Matos was unhappy with the rules, he should go complain to the Olympics Committee instead of expressing his unprofessional attitude. His country/people should be so proud [sarcasm] of him, their representative , for making them look like an ass in front of other countries of the world. Way to go Matos!

I admire the referee for taking that unexpected assault with professionalism. If he acted on impulse and hit him back, he would have probably been banned too.

Does nobody else notice what happens right before Angel kicks the ref? What is that gesture that the ref makes. I would say he’s making a call or something, but he pounds his chest and then sticks his hand out like that. . . I know one thing that means, but it’s hard to believe a ref at the Olympics would do such a thing. Does someone have another explanation of that gesture? In any case, Angel looked pissed before that, but the kick was clearly a response to that gesture.
Stop jumping on the guy until you figure out what the hell went on there. Everyone says it’s because he’s pissed about the call, but that’s not what it looks like to me.

I probably have no life either saying this to you but I couldn’t help it reading your comment. It sounds to me like you wanted to defend the guy who everybody hates but you couldn’t think of a reason. So instead, you give everyone the useless “get a life” argument. In the life that you think you have, no one is going to take you seriously if your ability to get a message across is as good as a door nail’s. Pathetic, pathetic, pathetic.
