Swedish wrestler, Abrahamian, discarded the bronze medal he won in the wrestling competition in protest at his semi-final defeat to the gold medallist, Andrea Minguzzi of Italy.
Ara Abrahamian, the silver medallist at Athens 2004, announced he was quitting the sport after throwing down his bronze medal on the mat. “This will be my last match. I wanted to take gold, so I consider this Olympics a failure,” the 33-year-old said.
Can anyone say sore loser?
The Swedish were said to be angry at the judge’s decision to award the gold medal to Minguzzi, and had to hold Abrahamian back as he yelled at Olympic officials.
The fans “booed” as the judges left the gym, while the Swedish wrestler hit an aluminum barricade with his fist as he left the arena.
Abrahamian only took part in the match after friends prodded him, saying, “I decided that I had come this far and didn’t want to let them down, so I wrestled,” Abrahamian said.
During the award ceremony, Ara Abrahamian took the bronze medal off his neck, stepped off the podium and dropped the medal in the middle of the mat before leaving. That’ll teach those officials!
IOC officials promised a disciplinary hearing, while the victorious Minguzzi said his celebration had been spoiled. “Certainly one can always question decisions made in the course of refereeing, but in sports it is appropriate to show sportsmanship and accept the results,” he said.

I’m not sure why Abrahamian didn’t receive a harsher punishment. After all, this IS the Olympics competition. His behavior is unacceptable, even if his performance should’ve received gold. There’s more to sportsmanship than just “sports”.

It was a protest against a corrupted sport. He was robbed in his semifinal due to a very strange decision from the judge. A lot of people involved in the sport think that it was a good symbolic thing to do: that someone dared to stand up against the corrupted machinery surrounding the wrestling community.

OIC is corrupt. It is time to stop OIC. Every one knows not one confronts. Very few have took action. They are doing the public feavor exposing behind the scenes kickbacks.

Corrupt or not this IS the olympics people! He would have more of a foot to stand on if he accepted the medal like a man then confronted the unfair decision following the ceremony. Bad sportsmanship and sore losers SUCK!!

People who write about the “bad loser” should watch the actual game. The judges penalized him AFTER the period was over, gave two different reasons (both were inaccurate) and refused to grant him video protest, altough the rules allow video protests. He obsiously reacted towards it. His actions on the podium were directed towards the wrestling federation, and hopefully the judges are penalized and the rulebook clarified after this.

A harsher punishment for sure! He needs a spanking!! Where is his father while all this is going on. He didn’t teach him good manners or good sportsmanship as a kid, but it is not too late. Dad, PLEASE out him over your knee and spank him until he has learned his leasson. It is your duty….

Well, guess what, FILA has to change their rules according to Abrahamians protest. So good to see that they indirectly say that he was right after all. You know they wanted to punish him for life for this?! And they only give a 2 year punishment for doping – very reasonable. So obvious they know they was the ones who made the error. And maybe you could take this away from “stupid celebrities” now? Thanks.
