News reports state the Julia Child was a spy. Julia Child, the “spy chef”? What in the hell? But recently released CIA files state Julia Child was an OSS spy, along with many others.
Julia Child, a television chef and cookbook author, was also a spy! If you thought her cooking show was interesting, it’s hilarious to think this bumbling chef worked for the government.
The government opened files that had been locked down for a very long time, which exposed the WWII-era spy ring.
Julia Child did have a long work history at different US stations abroad, but who knew the old gal was working for the Office of Strategic Services, OSS, somewhat similar to the CIA.
An interesting tidbit is that Julia Child admitted on her application with the OSS, that she was “impulsive,” because she quit a department store job once.
Julia Child was located in Sri Lanka, China, and then to France, where she received her chef training.
The full secret comes out Thursday, all of the names and previously classified files identifying nearly 24,000 spies who formed the first centralized intelligence effort by the United States.
The National Archives, which this week released a list of the names found in the records, will make available for the first time all 750,000 pages identifying the vast spy network of military and civilian operatives.
Other famous names “outed” in the newly released spy files are Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg and Chicago White Sox catcher Moe Berg.
Crazy huh? Do you remember watching Julia Child’s cooking show on television with her cutting herself accidentally with knives quite often? Somewhat hard to see her as an OSS spy isn’t it?
