Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh win against Belgium!

UPDATE: Misty May Treanor and Kerri Walsh won against Belgium! Treanor and Walsh continue their winning streak in Olympic action with a victory over Belgium, 24 to 22 in the first set, and win 21 to 10 on 2nd set! Total score with USA winning again!, 45 to 32.

Athens gold medalists Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor overcame five set points in the first set to beat Belgium 24-22, 21-10 and advance to the quarterfinals of the Olympic beach volleyball tournament.

The win Friday was the 105th consecutive victory for the Americans.

Liesbeth Mouha and Liesbet van Breedam led 18-12 and 20-17 in the first set of the best-of-three. Beach volleyball matches are up to 21, but the team must win by two, so it wasn’t until May-Treanor and Walsh scored three straight points after trailing 22-21 that they secured the set.

The Americans, who have not lost a set in Beijing, won the clinching set in a more characteristic 15 minutes.

Previous:

With the 21-12, 21-15 win, the Americans extended their winning streak to 104-straight matches and closed out pool play with a 3-0 record. The duo has posted a 457-18 mark since winning gold at the 2004 Athens Games.

“It’s one more win down, now we have to focus on the next one,” May-Treanor said after the match.

May-Treanor and Walsh will next play in the elimination tournament, which begins Friday.

The Americans dominated the Norwegians on Day 6, leading by as many as 11 en route to winning the first set 21-12. Walsh, who struggled to return Norway’s serve Thursday, had no trouble at the net, recording four blocks in the first set. The 6-foot-2 American, who turns 30 on Friday, had seven total blocks in the match.

Hakedal and Torlen started out strong in the second set, staying even with the Americans at 4-4 before May-Treanor and Walsh went on a 4-0 scoring run to jump into the lead. They closed out the set 21-15.

“They’re a scrappy team, but I think we out-scrapped them,” Walsh said.

Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor have three world titles already and are also the defending Olympic champs.

Previous news:

Kerri Walsh had sadly lost her wedding ring, given to her by husband, Casey Jennings on Sunday. Everyone searched the area with metal detectors and finally found her wedding ring. This time she covered the ring with black tape, just in case!

“I didn’t know I was superstitious about it until I lost it,” said Walsh, who had already called her husband and asked him to have another made so he can bring it to China when he comes out on Thursday.

Walsh and May-Treanor, the gold medalists in Athens, beat Dalixia Fernandez Grasset and Tamara Larrea 21-15, 21-16 for their 103rd consecutive victory. The Cubans, ninth-place finishers in both Athens and Sydney, fell to 1-1.

May-Treanor, who is married to Matt Treanor, of the Florida Marlins. Treanor does not wear her wedding ring when she plays volleyball.

Many people have inquired asking what the black thing on Kerri Walsh’s shoulder was, and it is just kinesio tape because of her shoulder surgery.

Yay! So glad Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor have another win! They are almost as good as “assured” a medal at this point!
