Tom Cruise at Odds with Dr. Drew Pinsky

Tom Cruise and Dr. Drew Pinsky

Tom Cruise is very upset after a recent article in Playboy, where Dr. Drew Pinsky suggests that Tom Cruise has a mental illness.

Dr. Drew speculates that Tom Cruise’s belief in Scientology could be because of neglect in his childhood.

In the Playboy interview, Dr. Drew says, “A lot of people in the public eye who behave strangely have mental illness we can learn from, and much of it is based on childhood trauma, without a doubt,” says Pinsky. “Take a guy like Tom Cruise. Why would somebody be drawn into a cultish kind of environment like Scientology? To me, that’s a function of a very deep emptiness and suggests serious neglect in childhood – maybe some abuse, but mostly neglect.”

Cruise’s people quickly responded to Dr. Drew’s diagnosis and Tom Cruise’s lawyer, Bert Fields had this to say, “I don’t know what kind of a doctor this guy is, but this posturing flake pretends to diagnose people he’s never met and suggests all Scientologists are mentally ill,” Fields tells PEOPLE. “This should tell you something about the quality of his opinions. They’re ridiculous.”

Tom’s lawyer, Bert Fields told the New York Post that Pinsky sounded like a Nazi, and continued saying, “This unqualified television performer, who is obviously just looking for notoriety, is so grotesquely unprofessional as to pretend to diagnose Tom and others without ever meeting them,” Fields told the Post. ”He seems to be spewing the absurdity that all Scientologists are mentally ill. The last time we heard garbage like this was from Joseph Goebbels.”

Dr. Drew Pinsky’s rep issued an apology for the statements stating, “Although Mr. Fields’s intent is clearly to slander and discredit Dr. Drew, under no circumstances is Dr. Drew making a blanket diagnosis about Scientology nor Mr. Cruise whom he does not know. Dr. Drew was simply using Mr. Cruise as an example of someone who is recognizable to help the public understand. Again, Dr. Drew meant him no harm.”

Do you think Dr. Drew’s statements were out of line?

Scientology is good and can help people toward a better life. I agree that Dr. Drew’s statement is ridiculous. I’m a Scientologist and I did have a good childhood and was not beaten in any way. Dr. Drew makes a generalization which is very bad for a guy in his position. Shame on you Drew! I used to like you but now that affinity is a little bit flawed because of your unprofessional statement. Nobody in the public really knows what Scientology is all about. They talk about Xenu and similair bullshit. The Reactive Mind is probably the most important factor in Scientology and that is never written about anywhere. Strange?
