USS Kitty Hawk retires.

Posted on May 29, 2008

The USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier departed from Japan on Wednesday, May 28, 2008. It was the oldest ship in the US Navy. It would be decommissioned after about 50 years in service.

The Kitty Hawk left its port in Japan amidst huge fanfare. It would be replaced by the USS George Washington. It was due to sail to Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, before its final stop in Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington.

The Kitty Hawk was the last conventionally powered aircraft carrier in the US Navy. Its substitute replacement, the USS George Washington, was nuclear powered. Despite some concerns regarding its use of nuclear power, it was safe and able to handle its own emergencies. Please read a related post here.
