Dead iron lung killed Dianne Odell.

Dianne Odell, who spent about 58 years in an iron lung, died after a power failure disabled her breathing machine. She was at her family home near Memphis, in Tennessee.

Dianne’s family said their emergency generator failed to work. She was totally dependent on her iron lung since she was struck by polio when she was 3. Will Beyer, her brother-in-law, said that they did everything they could but she could not breathe independently without her iron lung.

Dianne had “bulbo-spinal” polio years before the vaccine was discovered to prevent it. She completed her education and even wrote a book.
