Thunderstorms with hail and tornadoes killed 8 people amd wrecked many houses in Parkersburg, Iowa. Among the dead, 5 were from Parkersburg and 2 were from New Hartford. Fifty people were injured.
Parkersburg’s south side was reduced to rubble. The damaged properties included a high school and some homes.
A storm hit the St. Paul suburb of Hugo, Minnesota. Around 48 houses were destroyed or damaged. Twenty people were missing but some of these could be just out of town for the Memorial Day weekend.
The authorities said that the tornado season usually peaked in the spring and early summer. It would return again in the late autumn.
