South Africa had a wave of violence as poverty made some locals jealous. Their ill placed hatred misguided them to act upon immigrants. The locals blamed the immigrants for competing with them and removing their jobs.

Thousands of migrants were lynched and forced to leave by locals using guns, machetes, clubs and weapons. The locals had resorted to a primitive form of killing by necklacing a victim with a tire doused in flammable petrol. The victim was then set ablaze.

Necklacing was common in the 1980s -1990s. It was a fatal punishment used by informal people’s courts. This method of death sentence has been used against Zimbabweans and Mozambicans who had migrated to South Africa to seek work and escape from poverty in their native countries.
