Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick & Christine Beatty indicted in sex scandal
Posted on March 25, 2008Kwame Kilpatrick, Mayor of Detroit, 37, was charged after sex messages were seen to have contradicted his earlier denials that he had an alleged affair with his aide. He pleaded not guilty. Christine Beatty, 37, the aide, was also charged and she also pleaded not guilty.
Mayor Kilpatrick said under oath last year that he did not have an affair with Ms Beatty, his chief-of-staff. She also denied under oath that she had a romance with the Mayor. She resigned in Jan. 2008. They were charged for lying under oath. They faced separate court hearings and were released on bail. Their cases will be heard on June 9.
The prosecutor, Kym Worthy, said that she had 12 counts of criminal indictments. They included perjury, obstruction of justice, and misconduct in office. Mayor Kilpatrick, Detroit’s youngest elected leader, has vowed to stay in office and fight the charges.
Christine Beatty, 37, is married.
