After 8 years and 5 different Home Secretaries, the UK government has finally agreed to approve Sarah’s Law. This law was named after Sarah Payne, 8, who was killed by a previously convicted pedophile, Roy Whiting, in 2000. The US has already had Megan’s Law, an equivalent measure to alert people to pedophiles.

Sarah’s Law would enable single mothers to ask police about the backgrounds of their potential boyfriends. They can ask if the men had previous child sex convictions. Mothers can also check on family members or neighbors who regularly look after their children. However, they are strictly disallowed to pass the information to anybody else. Even if they knew that a convicted pedophile lived in the neighborhood, they are forbidden to warn others about it.
