Kanye West, Amy Winehouse Lead Grammy Nominations
Posted on December 6, 2007It’s no secret that Amy Winehouse and Kanye West have had many personal struggles this year; but, the two artists enjoyed a bit of good news about their careers Thursday. It was announced that they earned a total of 14 Grammy nominations between them.
West, 30, whose mother died in November, earned eight nominations, including album of the year and rap album of the year (Graduation). Winehouse, 24, who has battled health problems all year, picked up six nods, including album of the year (Back to Black), song of the year and record of the year (”Rehab”), and best new artist.
Winehouse could not escape criticism even while being celebrated Thursday. Announcing one of her nominations, George Lopez said, “Can somebody wake her up around 6 this afternoon and tell her?”
Foo Fighters, Jay-Z, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake and T-Pain were the other top earners – each with five nominations. Nine artists earned four nominations each: Akon, Dierks Bentley, Chris Daughtry, Feist, Tim McGraw, John Newton, Ne-Yo, Rihanna, and Bruce Springsteen.
Album of the year contenders also included Foo Fighters (Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace), Vince Gill (These Days) and Herbie Hancock (River: The Joni Letters).
Feist, Paramore, Taylor Swift and Ledesi joined Winehouse on the list of new-artist nominees.
Also in the race for record of the year: Beyoncé (”Irreplaceable”), Foo Fighters (”The Pretender”), Rihanna (”Umbrella”) and Timberlake (”What Goes Around Comes Around”).
