Justin Timberlake’s New Sportswear Line
Posted on December 2, 2007Justin Timberlake is set launch women’s and men’s sportswear collections next Fall under his William Rast label. The clothing label has signed a three-year-contract with J. Lindeberg founders Johan and Marcella Lindeberg to branch out into womenswear via a new sportswear line.
“I have always admired the modern designs and sophisticated aesthetics of Johan and Marcella Lindeberg,” the singer, who founded William Rast with childhood friend Trace Alaya in 2005, told WWD. “I am really excited that we have the chance to develop these strong collections together and that my vision for a complete William Rast lifestyle brand is in the hands of two of my most favorite designers.” The result will be a collection with a “sexy tomboy attitude,” with intricately constructed T-shirts, tailored jackets, high-waisted skirts and fitted pants. Men’s wear fabrics such as wool herringbone will be used to create the more feminine silhouettes. Prices haven’t been set but are expected to be in line with the denim, which wholesales between $90 and $100.
The line is set to be launched at Coterie and Project Las Vegas this winter for fall ’08 retailing. Offerings will include blazers, casual jackets, sweaters, wovens, pants, leather and outerwear. Currently, about 95% of William Rast sales come from denim. Johan and Marcella Lindeberg hope to change that with their expanded designs.
“We don’t want to make another J. Lindeberg,” explained Lindeberg. “This is an American brand, and it has to be relevant to Justin and Trace. We’ve done a lot of research about their roots in Tennessee, and are giving the collection a sense of the American South, with elements of modern Hollywood and a utilitarian edge. I like the way Justin dresses—the blazer, the jeans, the Adidas shoes. It’s of his generation and it has an urban influence but is sharp and chic. So we have to make things he loves and will always want to wear, on stage and off.”
