Quaids Escorted by Police to Visit Twins

Dennis Quaid and his wife, Kimberly Buffington, arrive at an April, 2006, movie premiere during happier times
Actor Dennis Quaid and his wife Kimberly were given a police escort to a Los Angeles hospital on Friday despite their pleas for paparazzi to respect their privacy while the couple’s newborn twins battle to recover from a recent drug overdose. The Quaids were apparently being mobbed by photographers so intensely, they were unable to make their way to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center to visit their hospitalized children.
The babies, Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace, were born on Nov. 8, 2007. They were given 10,000-unit doses of anticoagulant Heparin by mistake, instead of the standard 10 units and are currently in intensive care battling for their lives. The hospital’s chief medical officer, Michael L. Langberg, has publicly admitted the error was “preventable” and involved “a failure to follow our standard policies and procedures.”
This tragic case underscores one of the biggest problems facing the health-care industry: medication errors. At least 1.5 million Americans a year are injured after receiving the wrong medication or the incorrect dose, according to the Institute of Medicine. These incidents have more than doubled in the past decade.
Quaid, 53, also has a 17-year-old son with his ex-wife Meg Ryan.
